07.0 Final Project Proposal [Michelle Spitzer]

The coffee table is often the central piece of furniture in a college student’s apartment.  We use them to study, work, eat, and socialize.  So I propose that the coffee table could do so much more than it currently does.  It could keep your coffee or soda hot or cold during a long study session and give you a writing surface to work out problems on. It could produce light to work by or create atmosphere and become a conversation piece.

Schematic and sketch drawings:

Parts, components, materials:

  • Hot/Cold plates (existing product to save time)
  • LEDs
  • Fans to cool the table
  • Hookup wire
  • Resistors
  • Magnets and hall sensors for switches
  • Acrylic drawer organizers
  • Plexi surface for writing surface and LED strips
  • Pressure sensors for writing surface
  • Photo resistor for white LED strip
  • Potentiometers for colored LED strips
  • Wall plug
  • Board(s) to control various functions
  • Plywood and Hardwood to make the coffee table

Skills or knowledge I’ll need to acquire:

  • How to deal with wall power and splitting it between various boards and appliances
  • How to make low cost boards
  • Using pressure sensors to control LEDs
  • Creating switches with magnets and hall sensors
